Phonics at Biggleswade Academy
Phonics is one way that we teach children at Biggleswade Academy to read quickly and skilfully. Children in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 follow a structured daily phonics program called ‘Letters and Sounds’. Children are taught to recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes, identify the sounds that different combinations of letters make and to blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word.
Children are then able to use this knowledge to ‘decode’ new or unfamiliar words. This is the first important step in learning to read. Over time, Children develop these skills and become fluent and confident readers which enables them to develop a lifelong love for reading.
